ARTIST
STATEMENT
My paintings challenge the traditional idea of completeness. Within the
compositions, I am exploring the extent of paint application necessary for a
piece to feel whole. Each work has the extreme spectrums of drawing and
painting where each component can suffice separately as well as symbiotically.
The construction lines lead the viewer’s eyes to the fully rendered oil paint
passageways that not only highlight areas of importance, like a spotlight in a
theater of artifice, but also expose my process to the viewer. I embrace
translucent and opaque layers of paint to reflect the multiple meanings within
my work as well as expose my process to the viewer in hopes that osmotically the
observer shares the experience of development that I had encountered. My goal
with this constant interaction of oil paint and charcoal on paper is to catch
and hold the spectator’s attention long enough to question my intentions and
reasons for approaching the figure in this manner.
Construction takes on a vital role within my work. There is a concrete parallel
between construction building and the human figure in my pieces. The
construction lines from the drawing create the foundation and skeleton for the
surface of the paintings, just as the frame within a building is a necessity for
the walls to stand. The beauty of the surface of the painting could not exist
without the bare skeletal drawing, reminiscent of Renaissance cartoons, also
known as preparatory drawings, used for paintings.
Renaissance cartoons, Tenebrism, Artifice, Mannerism, Realism, and even an
appropriated form of Minimalism are all painting traditions that are embodied
within my work. I realize that the history of painting is one of length and
grandeur, with exposing my process, from the bare construction to the fully
rendered surface, and pushing the characteristics of painting and drawing to
their extreme I am exploring an exaggeration and embellishment of past
traditions. |
