Ann Gordon - artist
statement:
Ann sees
her paintings as an invitation to explore the process
of her work where the viewer is taken on a journey of
the evolution of the painting. Maintaining a detailed record of the stages of
her paintings helps her
focus on the journey of creating a work rather than the finished painting.
Starting with a plan but discovering the way a work takes on new directions and
allowing to learn from these new pathways is all recorded in
her visual diary. Ann introduces
these thought processes in the form of notes and drawings inspired by
her visual diary into the fabric of the painting so
there is a part of the development process actually within the painting.
Ann uses scraffito technique
to semi abstract landscapes and still life objects. She is
drawn to painting objects and landscapes which depict an idea of escapism. The
shapes which are the focal point are semi abstract so that the viewer is given a
key to what the work is about. The recognizable shapes are supported by panels
of texture and colour which are abstracted images of the surrounding environment
or emotions intended to extend the viewers experience of the scene.
Since entering the nesting phase of my life,
I’ve discovered my world has become smaller, I feel more connected to my
community and my focus is drawn to the minute happenings in my neighborhood.
In my recent work I’m exploring the relationship between wildlife and the urban
environment. I’m particularly interested in the parallels between the transient
nature of graffiti and the ephemeral presence of birds in the city.
In each of these works I have incorporated fragments of my neighbourhood
wallscape to express the rich layers of urban communication within the
environment. I wanted to reflect the creative process of a bird weaving her nest
by weaving thread into my own images and those of street art. /fontfamily>
