Yong was born in Shanghai and attended his first art classes there where the focus was on drafting and drawing techniques.  He came to Australia in 1989 and resumed his art studies in TAFE and the Charlie Sheard Studio School where the focus was on the principles of oil painting techniques, particularly those used by Old Masters.
