![]() |
Laurellen Saunders works in silk cut lino block to produce her dramatic relief prints. Laurellen studied a bachelor of fine arts and art education at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW majoring in a range of printmaking mediums. Her passion for travel (having travelled extensively through South East Asia as a child) led her to explore America, the UK and Europe. During her years overseas she gained much stimulus to further ignite her creativity and studied graphic design, advertising and layout at the London College of Printing. In Australia, Laurellen has always taken great inspiration from the coastal environment of the Northern Beaches of Sydney where she resides. Her works capture the patterns of nature, organic forms, her connection with the sea and its plethora of creatures. Relief printing has enabled her to bring her strong and playful visions to paper. Laurellen has a flair for design which is exposed through the all-over patternation within her prints. She works with acrylic ink using single, double and reduction printing methods, and also works with watercolour and gouache to hand colour prints. She has been compared to Preston with her clean line and bold shape. Her work pushes the printmaking medium, producing fresh, exciting images. Laurellen has hung in boutique galleries across the Northern Beaches since 1998 and she has been exhibiting in larger shows and producing commissioned works since her return from overseas in 2002.
