Born in Singapore of Arabic-Jewish descent I grew up listening and observing in obedient silence. Upon migrating to Sydney at the age of sixteen I experienced displacement and simultaneously, freedom. Each of my works is a multi-faceted reflection of my journey. The various media interact and blend to express my background, life experiences and emotions. Migration and the harmonisation of experiential discords are recurrent themes that seek resolution in my work. My abstract works are like mosaics weaving between past and present. Each painting is a fragment of an inner journey revealing memory, emotion, travel and a fusion of cultures Integral to my mixed media painting and expression is technique. The continuous process of experimentation with colour and layering through paint, ink, charcoal, pastel and acrylic on the canvas slowly unravels into luminescent and abstract biographies. Universal themes, metaphors and myth transpire in many of my paintings, inviting the viewer to read the textured work on many levels. Living near the harbour much of my work transforms ordinary scenes into reflective and imaginative mindscapes. Typically my paintings are evocative of meditative walks by the water. The rich colours are an exotic metamorphosis of South East Asia into Australia with many works suggesting banks, wharfs, piers and nearby boats. Glimpses, moments and clear mornings invite the viewer into feelings of warmth, strength, expression and even new beginnings. Subtly, the mysticism of the East and the rationalism of the West are reconciled. Ultimately for me painting is a discovery over time, when what lies beneath reveals itself.Exhibitions2008
