Artist Background
Sue Meyer grew up in South East Asia immersed in the sights and sounds of her exotic surroundings. Migrating to Australia at the age of sixteen, she simultaneously experienced a sense of cultural dislocation and liberation, feelings that have deeply informed her art. Her more recent works are infused with the influences of living in Australia.
Sue has gained her inspiration from a lifetime of living by the sea. Spontaneous markings and gestures, worn and scratched surfaces, multiple layering and strong elements of light and movement combine to make her artworks windows to other worlds, contemplation and reflection. Her paintings emerge instinctively and it is easy to be swept up in their fluidity and depth.
Her technique involves the application of layers including acrylics, ink, charcoal, pastels, and other media to create metaphorical images and luminescent abstractions that reflect memory, emotion, movement and the blending of diverse cultures.
For me, painting is a journey of discovery. Over time, hidden layers of thoughts, feelings and ideas evolve into expressive artworks. I continue to be fascinated with the possibility of creating something beautiful out of chaos and adversity. The smallest detail impacts on the balance and harmony of the whole.
